That functionary intended first to have something to say; something meant in all kindliness, but as Newt waited, shifting his bulk uneasily from foot to foot, his narrowed eyes traveled with restlessness, and his thin lips clamped themselves into a line indicative of neither gratitude nor penitence. The convicts thoughts for two years had been circling with uncomplicated directness about one focus. Newt Spooner had a fixed idea. The office of the warden was not a cheery place. I ts walls and desk and key-racks spoke suggestively of the business administered there.

This is a story of change and the long final awakening of a yearning to be more than what you were born to. The book is rated 4 / 5 as it exceeded my expectations.A good read.

Love the mountain history and peek into life in those early days
I started this book at least a dozen times. When I finally got to the middle it became an excellent read. Problem is the author does not do a very good job of getting you to the middle. Very dull at the beginning.
