What is it like for a child to suffer from dyslexia and not be able to read? This is the story of just such a girl, Maddy Stein, age eleven, as told by her son, Seth Stein, many years later. When any child cannot do what other children can do, the effect is humiliating, producing fear, avoidence, and great shame in the afflicted child. Dyslexia is a disability, and life is about confronting our disabilities and overcoming them. We all have them! Maddy Stein is "the little girl who could" using a paraphrase of the title of the beloved children's book, The Little Engine that Could." The book is also about the gifted teacher, who believed in changing the world one child at a time and taught Maddy about a lot more than simply reading.

This is the sort of positive story that is a pleasure to read about: obviously a true story (the author's about his own mother, or so it seems), and one that is wholly uplifting, all about overcoming dyslexia and how one selfless and formidable teacher managed the miracle. There are lessons here, and important ones. While I never thought this story was meant to be read to children - in that sense, the title, a paraphrase of The Little Engine that Could is perhaps misleading, it is nevertheless somewhat disappointing in the way it is told. There is no question that with some additional editing to restructure and streamline the story telling, this could become an excellent book. As it is, it remains an uplifting read and you won't regret having read it, though it isn't perhaps the literary experience you might have hoped for.

The Little Girl Who Could Growing Up With Hope Book 3 eBook Gordon S Black Kathy Sedgwick Moran Reviews
I was hoping this was a book that could be read to children who have been diagnosed with dyslexia, but it is not for children. It is really just the author' s tribute to his mother.
Being an avid reader, I have been a personal critic for him. I immediately learned of his potential in "The Strange Patient in Room 119" (a must read if you enjoy government conspiracy & espionage)! If you wish to read a good autobiography of Gordon S. Black, Phd., successful entrepreneur & pollster (Harris Pols). From humble beginnings, like myself, I found a close relationship to Gordon after reading "The Corn Is Forever".
I loved the story of Maddy and all of her family. Gordon S. Black is a marvelous author, with great empathy. He is doing a marvelous job here with the touching of a family history. He is, at the same time, teaching young students, as well as adults, that dyslexia can be as damaging psychologically as educationally. But with appropriate dedicated people the esteem of the student can survive in tact, and since dyslexia has nothing to do with IQ., these people can have wonderful self esteem, and become students with fine potential.
Gordon Black is to be especially well recognized for going way past the usual children's/adults story by including the excellent notes following the regular text. One can absorb and relish his fine capabilities as a professor at the University level. Here we learn important American history, by the wonderful footnotes added about many of the characters mentioned in the text. A fine rich story, wonderful for all ages, but especially wonderful for educators, parents, and most of all for students. The students who have struggled with learning, as well as the siblings and friends of such students, will appreciate all the more different learning styles and abilities, and not humiliate others of different learning abilities. I, personally, hope this book will be recognized for the excellent teaching tool it is at every level. Thank you Dr. Gordon s, Black, for shedding so much light on learning, on humanity, on a faith tradition, and on a marvelous MD., as well as the community, much like others in our country. Thank you for introducing new students to Frederick Douglass, and Susan B. Anthony, national treasures. This is an excellent read on every level for all age groups.
