Cryptid Hunters is the story about two swiss boarding school kids, a famous cryptid hunter with his own island, who turns out to be the father of one of the kids, a comely female professor, and the requisite evil bad guys, one of whom turns out to be one of the kid's grandfather. They all end up in the Congo looking for a dinosaur cryptid and one of them is looking for revenge--the cold kind--because the famous cryptid hunter used to be married to his daughter and she was killed on one of the cryptid hunter's Congo cryptid hunts. The problem is that the dino cryptid is dead, which the characters don't find out for a long time in the book. However, the real monsters in Cryptid Hunters turn out to be some of the people--the revenge obsessed grandfather and his brutal employees. The action is well-paced and the writing is nicely descriptive, but the true monsters in this book are of the human kind.

I'm on the fence as to whether not to recommend Cryptid Hunters. If you're a fan of Roland Smith, then you'll probably like Cryptid Hunters, but I think Sasquatch, one of his other books, is a lot more entertaining and has a lot more believable action. I will probably re-read Cryptid Hunters, but I will take my time getting around to it.

It's hard to imagine any pair of twins less alike than Marty and Grace O'Hara. Marty is tall, athletic and artistic. He loves cooking and drawing comic books, scuba diving and sky diving. He loves to play practical jokes, hates to follow the rules and is almost entirely without fear. Grace, on the other hand, is small and intensely academic. She's a writer, loves math and foreign languages and never, ever gets in trouble. Grace's list of fears is almost endless and includes everything from enclosed spaces to spiders to escalators. Despite their many differences, thirteen-year-old Marty and Grace are as close as any brother and sister can be, which offers them some small consolation when their famous photojournalist parents disappear in the .

After several months pass and no trace of their parents is found, Marty and Grace are pulled out of their Swiss boarding school (to Marty's delight and Grace's dismay) and bundled off to live with their new guardian, an uncle they never knew existed. Dr. Travis Wolfe (everyone just calls him Wolfe) is completely unexpected. Tall and intimidating, yet shy and kind, he reminds Grace of a somewhat disreputable pirate. Educated as a veterinarian, Wolfe has dedicated his life to the study of cryptids - animals whose existence has yet to be proven by science. The Loch Ness Monster, is a perfect example of a cryptid, so is the Sasquatch.

The twins have barely arrived on Wolfe's island home off the coast of Washington state when he learns that his nemesis, Dr. Noah Blackwood, is headed to the Congo on the trail of a dinosaur long thought extinct. Wolfe hastily makes plans to beat Blackwood to the site, intent on preventing his enemy from destroying such a rare find. The plans include sending Marty and Grace right back to Switzerland, but that's not how things work out. After literally falling into the Congolese jungle, the twins are on their own, facing both the natural perils that surround them and the long-buried truth about their family's past.

Roland Smith has a real knack for writing nature and/or history-based adventure thrillers for younger teens. In books like Peak, Storm Runners and the I.Q. series, he's created strong young characters who use their own wits and talents to face dangers as diverse as climbing Everest, riding out a Florida hurricane and outwitting international terrorists. In Cryptid Hunters, Mr. Smith gives us a brother and sister who must use their individual strengths to work together in extremely trying circumstances. This book also has great secondary characters - including a pair of very satisfying villains. While the action unfolds at a breakneck pace, there is still time for Mr. Smith to provide an interesting look at cryptozoology and the gorgeous natural wonders of the Congo. Altogether a fascinating read.
I loved reading this book when I was a young teen and I couldn't wait for my nephew to be old enough to enjoy it as well. (Sorry, I'm not going to give a summary of the book but it's a great book!)
I actually bought this for my 8 year old son. His teacher had apparently read this one in the class room, so I decided to read it for myself. I found the story fun and exciting. It was definitely written for a younger audience, but I enjoyed it as well. I've bought the next two and have begun reading Tentacles. Hopefully I can convince my son to read them as well.
In "Cryptid Hunters" by Roland Smith, Marty and Grace O'Hara are fraternal twins and are more unlike than alike, and this isn't just a reference to their looks, Grace is studious and conscientious, and Marty is a goof-off and a troublemaker. Unfortunately, due to lazy writing and characterization is that for all intents and purposes Marty and Grace are just pretty much unlikable. Marty is a smart-aleck and bore who thinks that he just so much smarter than everybody else, that the rules apply to everybody else but not to him, and that actions don't have consequences; he's just a snotty rich kid. Grace is a genius, a whiner, who's scared of, and faints at, nearly everything; she's a clichéd girl stuck in a boy's adventure.

Then they find out that their parents have been lost in a plane crash. No, really lost, Sylvia and Timothy O'Hara's globetrotting and adventuring parent's bodies are missing from the crash site. And since their parent's bodies can't be found, and they aren't paying the tuition, Grace and Marty are eventually dismissed from the Omega Opportunity Prepatory School to be sent t to live with their new legal guardian Travis Wolfe, cryptid hunter and founder of eWolfe. Marty can't wait to go, while Grace just plain doesn't want to go.

Travis is in a rush to go on an expedition to the Congolese jungle to look for the remnants of a dinosaur species long since thought to be extinct, and he doesn't want to take the two thirteen year olds along with him. Long story short, the kids end up going, and they end up lost, through some unbelievable circumstances that could only happen in a novel, in the Congolese jungle.

We are also introduced in short order to Travis's arch nemeses and this series' bad guy, the ruthless and hypocritical Noah Blackwood, his pet Caspian tiger Natasha, and his bloodthirsty thug and enforcer Butch McCall. They are on the hunt for the same dinosaur that Travis is, and they are just as interested in seeing that Travis and his party die in the process. Unfortunately, Noah Blackwood is just a shallow, hypocritical bad guy, think Dick Cheney, but without any of the good parts, who's upset that Travis married his daughter, and who died on one of Travis' expedition, and Butch, well, Butch is just a thug.

Out of Smith's hands is that a great deal of this novel revolves around outdated DNA science. Not out of Smith's hands is that the first half of this novel is very slow and that Travis is a goody two-shoes. On the other hand the last half pretty much rockets along giving the impression that this would make a pretty good tv movie. This is an adventure on the level of a Walt Disney romp that I think that younger kids, rather than older kids, will like more as this book lacks the punch that somebody who's in high school would expect from a book like this.
